Groups coming to Wembley, and groups leaving it

Almost every other town on our list has a mix of reasons. Wembley has one very large one and everything else arranges itself around it. A ninety-thousand-seat stadium and a twelve-and-a-half-thousand-seat arena share the same handful of streets, and on an event day those streets close.

Stadium and arena nights

Football, rugby league, NFL, and the concerts that fill the summer. The OVO Arena next door runs more than a hundred and twenty shows a year on its own. In both cases the coach is not a luxury: the roads around the ground shut, on-street parking is heavily restricted, and a private car is the slowest way out of Wembley there has ever been.

School trips

DBS-checked drivers and seatbelts throughout. Stadium tours run on non-event days, and the museums of central London are twenty-five minutes down the Metropolitan line — or forty in a coach that takes the group door to door with the bags.

Nights out

Boxpark Wembley on Olympic Way runs to eleven every night except Sunday, and the London Designer Outlet has a nine-screen cinema and a row of restaurants beside it. One drop-off, one late pick-up.

Shopping and the outlet

The London Designer Outlet opened in 2013 with more than seventy shops, and it is genuinely built for groups — undercover, flat, and a two-minute walk from where a coach can wait.

Airport transfers

Heathrow is the near one, twenty-odd minutes round the A40 and the M4 without traffic. Luton is up the M1, Gatwick and Stansted further round the M25. Luggage space for the whole group rather than a car boot each.

Weddings and funerals

Guest shuttles between church, reception and hotel, so nobody drives. Handled quietly and on time when it matters most.

What’s actually in Wembley

Wembley Park has been rebuilt around the stadium over the last fifteen years, and the result is unusual for London: an entertainment district you can cross on foot in ten minutes, with a coach park at one end of it.

The stadium itself opened on 9 March 2007 and seats 90,000 — the largest in the United Kingdom and the second largest in Europe. The arch over it stands 133 metres high and spans 315 metres, which makes it the longest single-span roof structure in the world. It is visible from a great deal of north-west London, and it is the landmark we give drivers when a group has got itself lost.

Two more worth knowing. The Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre opened in 2019 and seats up to 1,200 — a proper mid-size house for a group that wants theatre without going into the West End. And for anything requiring open air, Fryent Country Park is under three kilometres away.

Where a coach can actually pick up

This is the section that matters most on this particular page, because Wembley is the one town on our list where turning up without a plan does not work at all.

There is an official coach park, and it must be booked

Pink Parking is adjacent to the stadium. We reserve the space when you book the coach, so nobody arrives on the night to be turned away at a barrier.

On a non-event day the booking is not required — but it is still worth checking there is no event on, because “event” at Wembley includes arena nights, not just the stadium.

The roads close, and on-street parking is not an option

This is the single most common reason a Wembley group is late: somebody drives, cannot get near, and parks a mile away. A coach in the official park does not have that problem.

One small thing that makes a long night better

The stadium runs a lounge for coach drivers during events. Spaces are limited and given out first come, first served — which is one more reason our drivers get there early rather than exactly on time.

And Vaughan Road car park is not the answer either

It is barred at 1.98 m — six foot five, which will not admit a minibus, let alone a coach. It is worth naming because it is the lowest barrier in this data, but it is in Wealdstone, three miles away in the London Borough of Harrow, not in Wembley. It is the sort of car park a venue means when it says “there is parking nearby”.

Where we use away from the stadium

  • Wembley Park station — the sensible default for anything arriving by tube, and clear of the event-day closures if the timing is right.
  • Olympic Way, at the Boxpark end — for nights out, when the stadium is dark.
  • The London Designer Outlet — level, undercover and two minutes from where a coach can wait.
  • Fryent Country Park, Fryent Way — for school and family groups going into the park.

The bit nobody publishes

15 roads near Wembley, and only four of them stop a coach

Which is not what the open data says, because the open data assumes a coach is 4.4 m tall. It is not: a Mercedes-Benz Tourismo 53-seater is 3.68 m with the air conditioning on its roof and a MAN Lion’s Coach is 3.87 m, so we plan to 3.9 m and keep 4.4 m for what it actually describes — a 70-seat double-decker. Read that way, Wembley is an easy town for a full-size coach: four of these fifteen roads stop one, and two stop a 16-seater.

It is the double-decker that keeps getting caught here, which matters, because a decker is exactly what a seventy-strong supporters’ group asks for. Seven of the fifteen stop one outright, and of the eight that let it through, six do so by ten centimetres or less.

Headstone Drive is the one the lists get wrong

At 4.10 m it comes out of the open data marked against coaches, and it is not. A 53-seater goes under it with twenty centimetres in hand. What it stops is the double-decker — and it is nearly four miles north-west of here, in Harrow, so it only matters on a run out that way. Tell us the vehicle and we route around the right number.

Wembley is inside the London LEZ and ULEZ

Both zones cover the whole of Greater London, Wembley included, and which one applies depends on the vehicle:

  • Coaches over 5 tonnes fall under the Low Emission Zone.
  • Minibuses under 5 tonnes fall under the Ultra Low Emission Zone.

The exodus · how Wembley works

Ninety thousand people have to leave, and they all leave at once

A stadium is not really a building. It is a machine for filling and emptying, and the emptying is the hard part. Everything a coach does at Wembley is shaped by that one problem.

Wembley Stadium holds ninety thousand people. That is the largest crowd any venue in the United Kingdom can gather, and the second largest in Europe. Getting them in happens over two or three hours, in a steady trickle, and nobody minds much. Getting them out happens in about twenty minutes.

Why the roads shut

The answer to an exodus of that size is not more road. It is less road. Closing the streets around the stadium turns them into pedestrian space, which moves far more people per minute than any arrangement of traffic could. Wembley Park publishes it plainly: the roads are subject to timed closures and diversions, you cannot drive up to the ground, and on-street parking is heavily restricted.

Which is exactly why the coach park exists where it does. Pink Parking sits adjacent to the stadium, and coaches drop off and pick up there and wait through the event — including the encores. One coach removes fifty cars from a road network that has been deliberately narrowed. The stadium wants you to arrive that way.

The booking nobody expects

Here is the part that catches groups out. Coach spaces at Wembley must be pre-booked for stadium events. Not recommended — required. A coach that turns up on the night without a reservation is a coach with nowhere to go, in an area where there is nowhere else to go.

We book it when you book us. It is not an extra, and it is not something we leave to the driver to sort out at a barrier at half past six with fifty people on board.

And the driver

One detail we like: the stadium keeps a lounge for coach drivers during events. Spaces are limited and handed out first come, first served. A driver who has just brought fifty people across the M25 for a nine o’clock finish is going to be sitting somewhere for three hours, and it makes a difference whether that somewhere has a chair in it. It is a small reason our drivers set off early.

What this means for your booking

Give us the event and the finish time rather than a pick-up time. We work backwards from the moment ninety thousand people stand up — because the coach is not fighting that crowd, it is waiting on the other side of it, in a space that was reserved weeks earlier.
